Before heading to House of Blues the other night, we decided to try Market Garden Brewery in Ohio City. We’ve been hearing good things about it and were not disappointed. It is owned by Sam McNulty, owner of Bier Markt, Bar Cento and Speakeasy (all directly across the street). The space is huge, the vibe is casual and the outdoor beer garden is cool. It was a pretty nice evening for sitting outside, but we did notice the huge fireplace and many heat lamps around the outdoor area, which will be great once the fall chill really arrives.
Shoreway Cooler made with Victoria Prima Pils, housemade honey gin, lemon juice, lillet blanc and simple syrup
He said…This was really unique, and would go down way too easy on a hot day!
Pearl Street Wheat
She said…I loved this beer. I love a good wheat beer, and I love subtle hints of fruit in a beer. This was described as “a satisfying blend of sweet wheat and pale malts, clove and banana aromatics, and the zesty tang of wheat beer yeast.” I will definitely head back for another one of these!
House-Smoked Pork Tacos with salsa verde and house queso
She said…I really enjoyed these. So simple, so fresh, so delicious.
Fried Chicken Sandwich with braised collard greens, bacon, sawmill gravy and tomato
He said…I wanted to like this much more than I actually did. All of the components were good. The bread was fresh, soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside; the chicken was crispy and juicy; the collard greens were fresh and tasty, but it was just lacking something in my opinion. There just wasn’t that punch of flavor that I was hoping for. I’m not sure what would’ve taken it to that next level…maybe a spicy chipotle mayo? That being said, I’m still a fan of the place and would definitely return.
Bottom line…Good, quality food and great beer…we recommend it.
